What is GENA?

  • GENA (Global Exchange Network Association – formerly GENA) is a non-profit organization established in 2011. It aims to develop best industry practices and influence public policy in the field of electronic invoicing. GENA, previously known as EESPA, transitioned to a global approach with regional chapters in October 2023.
  • With over 100 members, GENA has significantly advanced the development and efficiency of electronic invoicing in Europe. The association provides business networking opportunities, outsourcing, financial, technological, and electronic data interchanging services. GENA’s role is to debate, promote, and defend member interests, ensuring that e-invoicing laws reflect the industry’s needs. It also actively engages with the e-invoicing workforce to understand industry issues and offer solutions for interoperability.
  • GENA’s governance includes a Chair, vice-Chair(s), the Secretary General, the Executive Committee, and various working groups. The Interoperability working group focuses on creating proposals for the development and maintenance of GENA frameworks. The Public Policy and Compliance working group ensures compliance with tax authorities’ e-invoicing legislation and policy. GENA collaborates with Peppol to create the Global Interoperability Framework, supporting the exchange and automation of supply chain documents.
  • They are currently discussing the use of a common network for B2B and B2G transactions by merging the EIN standard with the Peppol standard. They are also promoting the DCTCE model for tax authorities globally.
