High Court rules Victoria’s electric vehicle charge as duty of customs excise

In a landmark judgment, the High Court has ruled that Victoria’s distance-based charge on Zero and Low Emissions Vehicles (ZLEV) is invalid. The Victorian ZLEV charge imposed a per-kilometre fee for every kilometre travelled by Victorian-registered ZLEVs, with the most recent charges being 2.8c per kilometre for a fully electric vehicle (EV), and 2.3c per kilometre for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
