The St. Kitts and Nevis Inland Revenue Department has opened applications for businesses wishing to participate in the August 2026 Discounted VAT Rate Days. The reduced rate will apply on Friday 28 August and Saturday 29 August 2026. Approved VAT-registered businesses may charge VAT at 5% instead of the standard 17% on eligible transactions. The relief is limited to qualifying tangible goods that are in stock and available for immediate delivery on the designated dates. Goods that must be ordered or delivered later do not qualify. Services and other non-tangible supplies remain taxable at the standard rate.
The authority specifically excludes vehicles from the August event. Firearms, ammunition, cigarettes and alcoholic beverages are also ineligible. Businesses should therefore configure product-level tax codes rather than applying a general reduced rate across all sales.
Participation requires advance approval. Applicants must be VAT registered and generally must have filed all required returns and settled outstanding taxes, fees, licences, penalties and interest owed to the Inland Revenue Department or Customs and Excise Department. A business with an unresolved VAT objection may remain eligible if the conditions attached to the objection, including payment of 50% of the disputed tax, are satisfied. [sknird.com]
Applications must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on 14 August 2026. The first list of approved businesses is scheduled for publication on 17 August, with a final list on 27 August. Participating businesses must submit their discounted-rate sales report by 11 September 2026. [sknird.com]
Operational preparation is essential. Retailers should isolate eligible stock, update point-of-sale systems, train sales personnel and test receipts before the event. Discounted-rate sales should be captured separately from standard-rated sales and reported using the designated reduced-rate field in the tax reporting system.
Businesses should retain approval correspondence, stock records, receipts and delivery evidence to demonstrate that all reduced-rate conditions were satisfied.
