Denmark needs to reduce CO2 emissions by 70% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and achieve climate neutrality by 2050 to meet national and EU climate laws. The Danish Council on Climate Change recommended introducing a universal tax on greenhouse gases to help reach the emission reduction target. The government has now increased the CO2 tax rates for companies, with different rates for those outside the EU emissions trading system, those buying CO2 quotas in the EU, and those working with mineral processing. However, there is debate about whether exempting big polluters from the regular taxation rate will effectively lower emissions and help reach the 2030 target.
