THERAPY
We all feel better with a little VAT in our lives.
Every day, we immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of transactions, exemptions, invoicing and reporting. We get a peek behind the scenes of businesses, learning about their ingredients and recipes for dealing with restrictions, requirements and simplifications. We listen for the occasional off-note in their financial soundtrack and help them tune their instruments.
In short, we are the DJs of tax. We mix the right notes and chords, keep the rhythm going and try to make sure nobody gets hit by an unexpected assessment halfway through the dance.
But VAT is more than that.
When collecting news and interesting topics for VATupdate, we occasionally stumble across things that have absolutely nothing to do with taxation. Because, apparently, VAT can mean something other than Value Added Tax.
Take Vibroacoustic Therapy, for example.
According to music therapist Olav Skille, VAT is a form of therapy in which sound is transmitted directly to the human body. Loudspeakers are built into a chair, bed or couch, allowing the patient to sit or lie directly on the vibrating surface. The sound waves create vibrations that penetrate the body, providing a kind of sound massage.
Now, I am not qualified to judge whether Vibroacoustic Therapy actually makes you feel better. But I do see a certain similarity with our own kind of VAT.
Value Added Tax also has a way of getting under your skin. It travels through businesses, vibrates through supply chains and occasionally sends a shock wave through the finance department. Sometimes it even feels as though the tax authorities have turned the volume up to eleven (bonus points for anyone who gets the reference).
And just like in music, getting the right balance matters. Too much noise, too many conflicting signals, or one instrument playing out of tune can ruin the whole performance.
Perhaps that is what VAT specialists really do: we help businesses find the right frequency.
Although, if a VAT audit leaves you feeling thoroughly shaken, you might want to try the other kind of VAT.
At least with Vibroacoustic Therapy, the vibrations are supposed to make you feel better.
