The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) announced on 29 July 2026 that the implementation of its proposed e-Way Bill enhancements has been kept on hold until further notice. The changes had been scheduled to take effect on 1 August 2026 and formed part of a broader alignment between the e-Way Bill and e-Invoice systems.
The package included the mandatory capture of the Ship-to GSTIN in applicable Bill-to/Ship-to and combination transactions, related e-Invoice and EWB-by-IRN Application Programming Interface (API) updates, and the introduction of a voluntary e-Way Bill closure facility. Taxpayers and their solution providers had begun preparing systems to accommodate the additional data field and API behaviour.
GSTN has advised stakeholders that no associated changes are currently required in production environments. The earlier advisories and FAQs will be withdrawn from the GST Portal, and no revised implementation date has yet been announced. Businesses should monitor the portal for future advisories before making system changes. The full announcement is available here: services.gst.gov.in – Advisory 668.
