Malawi Advances e-Invoicing Rollout
- The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has successfully migrated over 91% of targeted VAT-registered taxpayers to its new Electronic Invoicing System (EIS) by June 2026, launched May 1, 2026. This system, replacing older Electronic Fiscal Devices, is central to Malawi’s digital tax administration push, enhancing compliance monitoring and tax audit effectiveness through real-time invoice data transmission and unique QR codes.
- The MRA implemented a phased approach for EIS, including stakeholder consultations, pilot testing, public awareness campaigns, and nationwide training. This strategy aimed to ensure a smooth transition for taxpayers. Malawi now joins other African nations like Kenya, Nigeria, and Zambia in modernizing revenue collection through e-invoicing.
- EIS offers tailored onboarding options based on taxpayer size and technical capacity. Large taxpayers can use API integration, medium businesses access a web portal, and small/micro enterprises utilize mobile tools with offline capabilities. This flexible approach ensures broad participation, accommodating varied operational environments and internet access levels.
