Summary
Brazil has released Technical Note 2014.002 version 1.40, introducing important updates to the NF-e Distribution Web Service (NFeDistribuicaoDFe) to accommodate the country’s new alphanumeric CNPJ format. The update changes all CNPJ fields within the distribution service from numeric to character format, ensuring compatibility with the new taxpayer identification structure. The implementation applies to both the testing and production environments from 8 July 2026, requiring ERP vendors, middleware providers, and e-invoicing platforms to update their systems accordingly.
The NFeDistribuicaoDFe service enables authorised users holding a valid digital certificate to retrieve electronic invoices (NF-e) and related fiscal events through three query methods: distNSU, consNSU, and consChNFe. The technical note confirms that returned XML documents will continue to be delivered in compressed Gzip format and reiterates the existing operational rules governing NSU sequencing and document retrieval. Businesses must ensure that their systems correctly process character-based CNPJ values while maintaining compatibility with the existing distribution mechanisms to avoid disruptions in invoice retrieval and downstream compliance processes.
The update also reinforces strict usage rules designed to protect the stability of the distribution service. Taxpayers must respect query sequencing requirements and observe the mandatory waiting period after all available documents have been retrieved. Improper or excessive requests may trigger Rejection Code 656 – Improper Consumption, temporarily blocking access to the web service. Although the changes are primarily technical, they require timely software updates and careful testing to ensure uninterrupted operation of Brazil’s electronic invoicing ecosystem as the country continues modernising its digital tax infrastructure.

While the changes are largely technical, they require businesses and software providers to adapt their e-invoicing systems before the implementation date of 8 July 2026. The note also reiterates the operational requirements governing document retrieval, NSU sequencing, and service usage limits, making compliance with the updated specifications essential for uninterrupted access to Brazil’s electronic invoice distribution platform.
