German government lowers excise duty on petrol and diesel

  • The German government plans a temporary 17-cent per liter reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel, costing 1.6 billion euros, to lower fuel prices for two months.
  • This measure, along with a potential 1000 euro tax-free premium for employees, is intended to alleviate high fuel costs, which have risen due to the Middle East war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Dutch petrol station owners are concerned about “tank tourism” to Germany due to the price difference, fearing significant revenue loss for their businesses and the Dutch state if the Netherlands does not implement similar measures.
