Hungary to Introduce New eVAT System for Taxpayers Starting January 2024

  • Hungary will introduce a new reporting mechanism called the “eVAT system” from 1 January 2024.
  • The new system will be available to all Hungarian VAT registered taxpayers, but it will not be mandatory until at least 2026.
  • During the transition period, companies can register on the new platform and test the eVAT system while still using the current ANYK system.
  • The eVAT system will eventually be the only way to submit VAT data to the tax authorities.
  • The system was supposed to be available for pilot testing from 1 October 2023, but technical issues have delayed its full operation.
  • The eVAT system will be used for submitting VAT returns, but not for EC sales and purchase lists and local purchase listings.
  • Data will need to be provided to the tax authorities in a fully automated way via an application programming interface (API).
  • The data will need to be in a predetermined XML format, but the exact structure of the file is not yet finalized.
  • The new system will include data validation during and after submission.
  • Optional accounting data included in the XML file may replace the obligation of providing VAT ledgers during VAT audits.
  • Draft returns will be prepared automatically by the tax authorities based on the XML file submitted by the taxpayer.
  • Taxpayers can confirm or resubmit the XML file if they disagree with the VAT figures generated by the tax authorities.
