- On November 22, 2023, MEPs have adopted opinions on three pieces of legislation proposed by the Commission to update the EU’s VAT regime, mainly to make it fit for the digital age.
- The most important legislation updates the cornerstone of the EU’s VAT regime, with MEPs proposing a one-year delay to most of the elements put forward by the Commission.
- The second piece of legislation calls for improved cooperation in the fight against VAT fraud and suggests that the Commission should support national tax authorities with resources and technical advice.
- Member States lost EUR 93 billion in VAT revenues in 2020, with one quarter attributed to VAT fraud linked to intra-EU trade.
