The Global Interoperability Framework in action: DBNA and e-invoicing in the US

  • Businesses in the US have not fully embraced electronic invoicing compared to payment automation.
  • The EDI 810 invoice syntax, which is based on the ANSI X12 standard and is 50 years old, is still widely used.
  • Sending PDFs by email is not considered e-invoicing. The Business Payments Coalitions (BPC) is an organization that promotes electronic B2B payments, remittance data, and invoices. They were behind the initiative to create a standard for the e-Invoice Exchange Framework called DBNA. This framework aligns with the Global Interop Framework standard implemented by Peppol and GENA.
  • The differences between GENA, Peppol, and BPC are minimal, with some variations in versions and envelope formats. DBNA has a federated governance approach for participant registration, while GENA and Peppol have a centralized agency. The invoice definition will be in XML using UBL syntax, derived from Peppol International Invoice.
