PwC has released the 9th edition of the VAT and Indirect Taxes in Africa guide, now called A Guide, 2023. This edition focuses on the digital revolution in Africa, with tax authorities digitising tax administration processes. The guide aims to bring awareness to indirect tax policy developments in Africa and help clients adapt to the changing fiscal environment. Many African governments are also increasing VAT rates, taxing the digital economy, and implementing ESG measures. Notable changes include Kenya’s introduction of e-TIMS, Tanzania’s adoption of electronic VAT reporting, and Ghana’s introduction of the Certified Invoicing System. South Africa has also introduced a domestic reverse charge mechanism to curb VAT refund fraud in the second-hand gold market.
