A new facility for generating a unique Reference Number (RFN) has been developed by GSTN for tax officers and taxpayers to use in communication related to GST administration. The RFNs can be generated on the GST Back office and verified on the GST Common Portal. System-generated documents already have a unique reference number or ARN, and the RFN need not be generated again in those cases. An advisory has been enclosed for generating and verifying RFNs. All offline communications must be superscribed with the RFN generated from the GST Back Office. The advisory has been forwarded to concerned authorities for necessary action. The GST portal generates various documents with unique identifiers, and a facility for generating RFNs by state tax officers and verifying them by taxpayers has been provided. Tax officers can generate RFNs on the BO portal, and taxpayers can verify them on the GST Common Portal. This feature is for offline correspondence issued by Model-2 state tax officers.
