Slovak Republic Government Approves Proposal for Special Tax on Russian Oil

On 18 May 2022, the Slovak Republic government approved a proposal from Finance Minister Igor Matovic for the introduction of a special tax on Russian oil processed in the country. The proposed tax, which is subject to approval in parliament, would be levied at a rate of 30% on the price difference (discount) between crude oil from Russia compared to the price for crude oil from other suppliers (Brent crude oil price). The proposal comes as the EU seeks agreement by Member States for further sanctions including an embargo on Russian oil, although the Slovak Republic is seeking an exemption.
