WTGIL Ltd (formerly Ingenie Ltd) arranges black box insurance for young drivers. Telematics devices are fitted to drivers’ cars, and Ingenie uses the data they collect to review premiums several times a year, reducing insurance costs for good drivers. At the end of the policy, Ingenie does not collect the telematics devices. It therefore argued that it had made a supply (or a deemed supply) of the devices to the drivers, and should have been entitled to recover VAT (of approximately £500k annually) incurred on their purchase.
