The Sejm, the lower of house of parliament, on Thursday passed a law temporarily scrapping VAT on food, gas and energy under a government scheme designed to shield Poles from the effects of rising inflation. 438 deputies voted in favor of the bill, no one was against, and two deputies abstained. Now the bill will be discussed by the Senate. Earlier, the deputies, in line with the recommendation of the Public Finance Committee, rejected all nine amendments to the bill during the second reading. The act provides that the reduced rates of tax on goods and services are to apply from February 1 to July 31, 2022.
