0% VAT on natural gas, electricity and heat

  • The government continues to take steps to help Poles in times of high inflation.
  • The Minister of Finance, Tadeusz Kościński, sent another request to the Commissioner for the Economy.
  • This time it concerns the possibility of applying zero VAT in Poland for natural gas, electricity and heat.

Poland applies for a zero VAT rate on natural gas, electricity and heat for a period of 6 months – from January 1 to June 30, 2022.

At the beginning of his letter, Minister Kościński stressed that he welcomed the agreement on the reform of VAT rates.

The adoption of this directive will allow for a more effective and adequate response to crisis situations

– said the head of the Ministry of Finance.

At the same time, he asked for the directive to be published quickly in the EU’s Official Journal, so that countries can benefit from the agreed rules as soon as possible.

Due to the need to counteract the dynamic increase in energy prices in Poland, which is a significant financial burden for families and households, the government decided to temporarily reduce VAT rates for natural gas, electricity and heat. However, in the face of constantly rising energy prices, in our opinion, it is necessary to take additional measures that will help the society and entrepreneurs, including small businesses, protect themselves from the consequences of inflation.

– pointed out Tadeusz Kościński.

The Ministry of Finance implements a VAT reduction (from January to March 2022) on:

  • gas supplies (from 23% to 8%)
  • electricity (from 23% to 5%)
  • thermal energy (from 23% to 8%)

The next steps concern changes in the excise duty. More information in the press release .
