IVA Autumn Conference 21-22 October 2021

The International VAT Association (IVA) organised its Autumn Conference on 21 and 22 October 2021. The conference was held in Brussels, Belgium. The VATupdate Team was kindly invited to attend this conference.

The IVA is an independent body on international VAT issues, representing the interests of businesses and advisers involved in VAT or equivalent turnover taxes around the globe. In Europe, the IVA’s membership is represented in almost all 27 EU Member States, and in total 40 countries. Globally, the Association covers all major international markets.

The members of the Association are of varying sizes from major international law and accounting firms to smaller businesses, but all being highly specialised in their chosen field of indirect taxation.

The IVA organises conferences every 6 months, but due to the corona pandemic, these conferences have been held online only in the past one-and-a-half year. This conference in Brussels is the first time that the IVA members could meet-up in person again. Of course, taking into account the corona measures that still apply.

During the conference, various technical topics were discussed, whereby the experience, interpretation and application of the VAT rules is described and discussed in different presentations. Speakers typically are from governments, EU Commission, advisory firms and universities.

Some of the topics covered during this conference were the following.

  • Update on OECD work on sharing economy, reporting by platforms and more;
  • EU Commission experience of 3 months new e-commerce VAT rules;
  • Fiscal representation in the EU;
  • Approach and views of Portugal tax authorities on technology and VAT reporting;
  • Customs and the new VAT e-commerce rules – difficulties and solutions;
  • VAT refund process in UAE.
  • Latest developments on technology and VAT;
  • and much more…
