Slovakia Launches Import VAT Postponement Scheme

  • Slovakia’s Act 102/2024 Coll., effective from July 1, 2025, introduces Postponed VAT Accounting, allowing Slovakian businesses to defer import VAT by reporting it in their VAT returns, improving cash flow and easing compliance burdens.

  • To qualify, businesses must file a customs declaration, hold a Slovak VAT ID, possess an Advanced Economic Operator license, and use the imported goods for taxable business activities under Slovakian VAT law.

  • EU-established businesses can benefit from the scheme starting January 1, 2026, if they meet the same eligibility requirements, aligning Slovakia with broader EU VAT practices and promoting cross-border trade efficiency.

  • The new VAT return format from July 2025 reflects these changes and includes updates to VAT rates; early preparation is essential to ensure businesses can meet strict participation conditions and fully benefit from the scheme.
