The VAT rules for electric vehicle (EV) charging are still catching up with the rapidly growing market. Currently, there are over a million full EVs and 655,000 plug-in hybrids on the road in the UK. Businesses involved in EV charging should be aware of potential VAT disputes and complexities. One key issue is the limited VAT recovery for EV charging costs compared to petrol or diesel vehicles. HMRC’s policy on VAT recovery for EV charging costs is less generous, and they have yet to provide amended guidance despite announcing a review in 2022.
