The Japanese Consumption Tax (JCT) is a value-added tax levied on most goods and services in Japan. The standard rate is 10%, with a lower 8% rate for certain items. There are rules for invoicing and record-keeping, and a new Qualified Invoice System will be introduced in October 2023. Businesses with significant revenue, importers, digital service providers, and those under the Qualified Invoice System are required to register for JCT. Filing requirements include quarterly returns detailing taxable sales and input tax credits. Failure to comply can result in penalties. Foreign businesses providing digital services to Japanese customers also have JCT obligations.
