In a letter ruling involving various online courses, the Tennessee Department of Revenue concluded that such courses are subject to Tennessee sales and use tax as remotely accessed computer software and that the addition of certain live chat or self-paced features with some live instruction did not alter the taxability of these transactions in this case under a true object analysis.
