The Council adopted a new regulation strengthening sustainability rules for batteries and used batteries. The regulation will regulate the entire lifecycle of batteries – from production to reuse and recycling – and ensure they are safe, sustainable and competitive.
The Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council will apply to all batteries, including all waste portable batteries, batteries for electric vehicles, industrial batteries, starter, lightning and ignition (SLI) batteries (mainly used for vehicles and cars) and batteries for light means of transport (e.g. electric bicycles, e-mopeds, e-scooters).
