- A sugar tax on soft drinks will not be introduced until at least 2026, according to studies commissioned by the cabinet. State Secretaries Marnix van Rij and Maarten van Ooijen wrote to the House of Representatives that major implementation problems are not expected and the tax will contribute to the reduction of sugar consumption while increasing treasury proceeds.
- The plan for a sugar levy is included in the coalition agreement, and a progressive sugar tax on soft drinks would replace the current flat tax.
- The expectation is that manufacturers will reduce the percentage of sugar in soft drinks to avoid the higher rate.
- The sale of soft drinks and other non-alcoholic beverages is expected to decrease by about 14%. A broad sugar tax, including on products other than soft drinks, will be studied next year.
