HMRC have announced the closure of their VAT registration helpline from 22 May 2023. The helpline was specifically for taxpayers with queries regarding an application for registration. Staff from this helpline will be redeployed to process VAT registration applications. HMRC stated that over 85% of calls to the helpline are from taxpayers requesting an update on the progress of their VAT registration applications. HMRC consider that as that information is available from the where’s my reply tool, HMRC resources are better spent processing applications than responding to queries about them.
