EU – IOSS Scheme: Customs & Business Benefits for E-Commerce Vendors

  • The EU’s Import One-Stop-Shop (IOSS) scheme, introduced on July 1, 2021, simplifies VAT for online vendors and e-marketplace operators selling low-value goods (under EUR 150, excluding excise goods) from outside the EU directly to B2C customers within the EU.
  • IOSS allows vendors to collect, declare, and remit VAT via a single monthly return, paying VAT at the point of sale based on the customer’s destination country, eliminating the need for customers to pay import VAT at customs.
  • The scheme offers significant benefits for both businesses and consumers, including simplified customs clearance, reduced administrative burden, and enhanced transparency, although it is specifically for B2C imports of low-value goods from non-EU countries.
