Slovakia Raises VAT on Sugary and Salty Foods

  • Slovakia will apply the 23% VAT rate from January 2026 to sugary and salty foods like chocolate, soft drinks, and snacks, while keeping exemptions for staples such as baby food and dairy.

  • The reform aims to discourage excessive sugar and salt consumption linked to obesity and related diseases, while strengthening fiscal revenues and aligning with broader European health-focused tax trends.

  • Similar policies exist across Europe, including Hungary’s junk food tax, Portugal’s sugar-based VAT on drinks, and the UK and Ireland’s sugar levies, encouraging healthier diets and industry reformulations.
