Brazil’s National E-Invoice Standard: Streamlining Compliance and Revenue Control by January 2026

  • Brazil will implement a national electronic service invoice standard, NFS-e, starting January 2026.
  • The new standard replaces various municipal formats to reduce costs and simplify compliance.
  • Municipalities will have improved revenue control and transparency.
  • Failure to adopt the standard may result in loss of Union transfers.
  • By August 2025, 1,463 municipalities had signed the agreement, with 291 issuing NFS-e.
  • The Federal Revenue Service is encouraging the remaining municipalities to adopt the standard.
  • The reform aligns with the broader Consumption Tax Reform.
  • Benefits for municipalities include better revenue management and compliance with tax document sharing.
  • Businesses will experience simplified processes and potentially lower costs.
  • The Federal Revenue Service is actively supporting and monitoring the adoption process.
