- On 22 August 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will eliminate all tariffs on U.S. goods covered under the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), effective 1 September 2025, following the U.S. commitment to exempt compliant Canadian exports from tariffs.
- Despite this tariff removal, Canada will maintain tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos while working to resolve trade issues in these strategic sectors, emphasizing the importance of supporting Canadian workers and businesses.
- Carney highlighted Canada’s competitive trade advantage under CUSMA and outlined plans for a comprehensive industrial strategy and new consultations to prepare for the upcoming CUSMA review, aiming to strengthen trade, investment, and security partnerships with the U.S. in a changing global landscape.
