- Customs Surveillance Activation: The European Commission has activated a customs surveillance system to monitor the import and export of metal waste and scrap, including ferrous materials, aluminum, and copper, to enhance oversight and data collection.
- Steel and Metal Action Plan (SMAP): Adopted on March 19, SMAP aims to address challenges in the EU metals industries, promoting metal circularity to support decarbonization efforts and align with the goal of a 90% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
- Monitoring and Collaboration: In response to declining metal scrap availability and external pressures, the Commission is working with industry stakeholders to improve data classification and monitoring, using import/export statistics to determine if further actions are needed by the end of Q3 2025.
