- The Dutch commissioner has urged the Polish government to initiate discussions on the Tobacco Excise Directive (TED) during Poland’s EU Council presidency, aiming to harmonize excise duty rates on tobacco products across the EU.
- The European Commission is proposing to double the minimum excise duty rate on cigarettes from EUR 1.8 to EUR 3.6 per parcel, potentially raising the price of a pack of cigarettes in Poland to around PLN 40, significantly impacting consumers.
- There are concerns that unifying excise duties could lead to increased tobacco prices, reduced consumption, and the growth of the grey market, as seen in other EU countries where high taxes have driven consumers to seek cheaper alternatives.
