The European Court of Auditors (ECA) concludes in its new report that the EU’s financial interests and the internal market are not sufficiently protected against import VAT fraud when simplified customs procedures are used. There are serious shortcomings in Member States’ controls and there are weaknesses in cooperation at EU level and between Member States to prevent abuse of these schemes.
