- E-Invoicing Mandate Overview: India’s e-invoicing mandate, rolled out in phases, currently requires businesses with an annual turnover exceeding 5 crore (~550 K€) to submit invoices through the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) for clearance, with the system initially starting in October 2020 for large businesses.
- Invoice Submission and Delivery: Invoices must be submitted in a specific JSON format to the IRP, which validates them and generates an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and QR code. Businesses can deliver the cleared invoices in any format, including paper or electronic, but must include the IRN and QR code for verification.
- B2C E-Invoicing Pilot: As of September 9, 2024, a voluntary pilot program for B2C e-invoicing has begun, aiming to assess its benefits in the retail sector, with potential for nationwide mandatory implementation based on pilot results
