- From October 8, biometric-based Aadhaar authentication and document verification have been implemented for GST registration to prevent tax fraud through misuse of identification documents like Aadhaar and PAN cards.
- The introduction of these measures follows incidents in Kerala and other states where fake GST registrations were created using stolen identification documents, with significant reductions in fraud reported in Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat after adopting biometric authentication.
- The GST council recommended phased implementation of biometric Aadhaar authentication, with taxpayers selected based on data analysis and risk parameters, requiring high-risk cases to complete the biometric process within 15 days of submitting the GST REG-01 application.
