The Finance Ministry is expected to review the GST rates on digital news subscription, as per the Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s recommendation to reduce the rate from 18% to 5%. The online media outlets have been demanding this reduction, citing the impact on their revenue model and the quality of news delivery. The upcoming GST Council meeting on September 9, 2024, in New Delhi, is expected to discuss this matter. Currently, printed newspapers, journals, and periodicals are exempted from GST, while online news subscriptions are taxed at 18% as OIDAR services.
