Sales tax holidays are popular among states, with 19 planning to hold them in 2024. They take different forms, such as exempting outdoor recreational equipment in Florida and clothing in Iowa and Oklahoma. While proponents claim they boost economic growth, studies show that they mainly shift timing of shopping rather than increasing overall spending. Additionally, the holidays often exempt goods and services during peak demand times, resulting in revenue losses for transactions that would have occurred anyway.
