Beer taxes in the United States are the most expensive ingredient in beer, adding about 40 percent to the retail price. The federal government collects an excise tax on fermented malt beverages, and all 50 states and the District of Columbia have their own beer excise taxes. The state beer excise tax rates range from $0.02 per gallon in Wyoming to $1.29 per gallon in Tennessee. Missouri and Wisconsin have the second-lowest rate at $0.06 per gallon, while Alaska has the second-highest at $1.07 per gallon.
