The government is cautiously optimistic about bringing natural gas under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime by 2024-25, which would accelerate the shift towards natural gas. Taxation remains a challenge, but the government is working on resolving the issue through negotiations with states. Once resolved, the use of natural gas will make economic sense, and India aims to increase its share in the country’s primary energy basket to 15% by 2030.
