Starting January 1, 2024, Denmark has implemented a cultural levy affecting on-demand audiovisual media services. It includes a 2% base rate on Danish revenues for all on-demand streaming companies, with an additional 3% surcharge for those investing less than 5% in local content. The levy applies to various business models but excludes audio-only services. Smaller providers and those involved in public service activities are exempt. The funds from the levy will support the production of Danish media, and the specific implementation details are yet to be finalized. This move is in line with EU directives and OECD rules on digital economy taxation (BEPS).
