Booking.com will pay €94 million to settle a tax case in Italy after an investigation by the Italian financial authorities into the Dutch-origin company for suspected tax evasion. The Guardia di Finanza claimed that Booking evaded €153 million in VAT between 2013 and 2019 when renting out holiday homes. Booking argued that it is the responsibility of the landlords to withhold taxes on the rental of properties by private individuals. Two former financial executives of Booking.com were questioned last year, and the Italian authorities worked with the Dutch Public Prosecution Service. The company stated that it strives to comply with the laws in all countries where it operates and that it has reached an amicable, mutual agreement.
