- The House of Representatives, led by SP MP Jimmy Dijk, has voted to eliminate the tax on single-use plastic packaging.
- The tax increases costs for consumers and does not incentivize producers to become more sustainable, which undermines support for climate measures.
- As of July 1, retailers and catering entrepreneurs can no longer offer products in free plastic disposable containers or cups, and customers must bring their own or pay an additional fee.
- The left-wing opposition parties BIJ1 and DENK, as well as the majority of the right-wing opposition, also support abolishing the tax.
- However, the ruling party VVD, along with outgoing Minister Micky Adriaansens, argue that the tax is intended to reduce plastic waste and that there are reusable alternatives available.
