- Japan has been implementing measures since 2019 to streamline and secure its tax systems, including upcoming changes to the invoice archiving requirement and the introduction of a qualified invoice system (QIS) on October 1, 2023.
- The country has also acquired PEPPOL Authority status, allowing for electronic document interchange with other authorized countries.
- Additionally, updated e-invoice retention requirements will be implemented as part of the Electronic Record Retention Law (ERLL) from January 1, 2024, with a grace period until then for businesses to adapt.
- Businesses can comply with the regulations by timestamping e-invoices before archiving or establishing an internal archiving system.
