The CBAM, acronym for Carbon Adjustment Mechanism at Borders, is the instrument of the European Union that establishes a sort of new “environmental customs duty”. The initiative concerns certain carbon-intensive products imported within the territory of the Union: the aim is to discourage the import of these products.
The imported products involved in the Mechanism, as it has been set up so far, are iron, steel, cast iron, aluminum, cement, fertilizers, electricity and chemicals. There are certain obligations for companies importing these goods. Some will start with the transitional period of CBAM, starting on 1 October. Further obligations are scheduled for 1 January 2026, when the final period begins.
