Government Proposes to Raise VAT Rate from 11% to 15%

Unofficial translation

The government of Prime Minister Najib Mikati agreed with the International Monetary Fund to increase tax burdens, most notably increasing the value-added tax from 11% to 15%, that is, increasing the burdens on consumers without any consideration of the enormous burdens that .have fallen on them in the past two and a half years.

In parallel with the introduction of new taxes on the import of certain types of cars, on various forms of built property, and on alcoholic and sugary drinks, VAT will be increased from 11% to 15% gradually over two years, i.e. an increase of 40%. But the former Director General of Accounting at the Ministry of Finance, Amin Saleh, points out to Al-Akhbar that “the calculation is much greater than that,” as before calculating the value-added tax, there is another tax that will be increased, which is: *Reconsidering the exchange rate of the customs dollar. Expectations are swirling.” About calculating it according to the price of a banking platform, which leads to an increase in customs duties on imported goods by about 15 times.” On top of this increase, “transportation, insurance, unloading, and commission costs will be added, before calculating value-added tax.” In other words, the effects of the value-added tax will be enormous .after all these increases, and its impact on the consumer will increase tremendously.
