There has been a proposal from the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) to raise the VAT rate by 3% to 10%, to generate income as savings for the public to use in retirement, aiming to provide financial security for elderly Thais. However, the government aims to extend the 7% VAT rate for another year, brushing off the proposal to raise VAT by the Progressive Movement.
