- The UK has implemented sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) restrictions on imports since leaving the European Union.
- These will be tightened from October 2023, meaning goods from France to the UK must comply with new administrative formalities.
- SPS checks involve verifying that imported products comply with UK sanitary rules.
- There are three stages of inspection: documentary control, identity control, and physical control. Live animals, animal products, and certain plants and plant products will need to be pre-notified to UK inspection authorities from October 2023 and accompanied by a sanitary or phytosanitary certificate.
- The use of the UK’s IPAFFS system is important to avoid non-conformities.
- Health and plant health certificates will also be required.
