The new VAT rules for e-commerce introduced in the European Union in July 2021 brought in €20 billion in VAT revenue last year, 26% higher than in 2021, according to data recently published by the European Commission. Thus, last year the member states collected VAT revenues of over 17 billion euros from online sales in the EU declared through the one stop shop and another 2.5 billion euros from online sales of goods imported from third countries . This figure also includes the new VAT revenues generated by the removal of the VAT exemption previously applicable to imports of low-value goods that did not exceed 22 euros and were among the most susceptible to fraud. About 130,000 companies have registered and collected VAT in a simplified way, through these special regimes.
