The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has identified that, in many instances, the value-added tax (VAT) registration number included on a customs clearance declaration does not correspond with the taxpayer noted on the customs declaration as either the exporter or the importer. On 8 May 2023, SARS issued a notification to stakeholders regarding such inconsistencies, which states that after a 30-day period (which has now passed) noncompliant taxpayers will be contacted and advised of steps to maintain compliance.
