On 5 April 2023 the Irish Department of Finance announced that a zero rate of VAT would apply for the supply and installation of solar panels for private dwellings from 1 May 2023. This measure was possible as a result of amendments made to the Principal VAT Directive by Council Directive (EU) 2022/542 of 5 April 2022, which added a number of new categories to which Member States can apply a zero rate of VAT.
